SLAGA is introducing a new monthly incentive for all members in hopes of promoting this interesting game of geocaching and encouraging more membership engagement. Adventure Awaits is a monthly challenge that will post on the home page of the SLAGA website on the first day of every month starting this October 2023. Those that complete the challenge, submit an entry form, and prove to qualify for the month's challenge by the last day of each month, will have their name entered into a drawing for that month's prize. After twelve months, one grand prize winner will be drawn from all qualifying monthly entries as well. SLAGA is excited to bring this new addition to the St. Louis Area Geocaching group.
The guidelines for SLAGA's Adventure Awaits monthly challenge are as follows:
- This new monthly challenge is open to all SLAGA members, basic and premium.
- Each month's challenge will be posted on the official SLAGA website home page on the first day of each month.
- Geocaches found and events attended must be within the month of the current challenge. No finds logged/events attended during a prior month are permitted.
- Participating members must complete and submit the Adventure Awaits entry form by the last day of the current month in order to have their name entered into that month's prize drawing.
- After each month, at the next SLAGA officers meeting, one winner will be drawn from all qualifying entries for that month's prize. The winner will be notified.
- One grand prize winner will be drawn from all qualifying monthly entries from October through the following September. The winner will be announced at the SLAGA Fall Picnic.
- Rules are subject to change by the SLAGA Officers.
SLAGA is providing a new means to enhance the geocaching experience for members with this new monthly challenge incentive. Check the SLAGA home page on the first day of each month, starting October 1, 2023 and start enjoying this fun outdoor hobby in a new challenging way.

NORTHERN CARDINAL AND RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER
If you look up "GeoBirding," you won't find it in the dictionary. It seems like an accurate term though, for combining the adventure of geocaching with the love of bird watching, and both are great ways to enjoy the outdoors. While at a recent event, the subject of seeing numerous Bluebirds while geocaching came up, and jasjaq123, Sally, mentioned that she takes great pleasure in birding and often combines both hobbies.
First a little clarification. Bird watching involves observing wild birds because they happen to be there, maybe at your feeder, on a walk, or while geocaching. But birding is a bit more intense. It's the act of seeking out and enjoying learning about these wild birds. It typically involves using binoculars, taking photos, using apps or books to identify birds by sight and sound, and keeping a journal.

OSPREY WILLET
Birds are beautiful and colorful. They streak through the sky or sit atop a tree branch or on water's edge. These feathered friends all differ from one another. They each have their unique behavior, appearance and sound. Birds can't help but fascinate us. So as outdoor adventurers, geocachers almost always see birds along a trail, and without realizing it, become at least novice bird watchers. But there are those with more of a desire to learn about these winged wonders and enjoy birding, instead of just watching birds while geocaching. Sally is one of them.

Santa Cachemas has been flying his sleigh over St. Louis since 2015, but at the end of December 2022, he parked the sleigh and set down the reins, as he stepped down from coordinating our holiday caching fun we all know as Cachemas in St. Louis. But Major134 (Peter Shaw) wasn't SLAGA's first Santa Cachemas, as that honor goes to the creator of the 'game,' 87preludea20a3 (Brandt Teske), for whom we are all grateful.
As a matter of fact, Pete was an FTF hound himself in those early days, that he says were very competitive. He was fortunate to make two FTFs and get the coveted ornaments that Brandt made back then. Pete recalls his first thrill of Cachemas: "In 2012, I was traveling down I-270 with Nick1081, when Nick’s phone pinged for a new cache. It was Day 7 and in Winter Park, Fenton. We were right at the I-44 exit so we immediately exited, raced over to Winter Park and were able to make the puzzle FTF, a co-FTF. I gave the ornament to Nick since he solved the puzzle while I was driving. It was being “in the right place at the right time” that allowed us to log the FTF as the parking lot filled with cachers just minutes behind us. Both of us were hooked on Cachemas."
