From a relaxing stroll around the farm visiting the animals, to the hustle and bustle of activities going on at the park shelter, the SLAGA Spring Picnic 2024 was a grand success! The event was held at Willoughby Heritage Farm and Conservation Reserve in Collinsville on a beautiful sunny Saturday (April 20) with cool spring breezes, and was hosted by mathmanbill (William Gottschalk).
SLAGA provided hamburgers, brats, and hotdogs, along with plates, napkins and utensils as always, while attendees brought delicious and varied side dishes, snacks and desserts to share with all. There was the usual silent auction table and the 50/50 raffle, but our host, mathmanbill, also mixed things up a bit. He had a geo-style scavenger hunt around the grounds and a TOTT skills contest too. He also placed two additional caches onsite for those wanting to solve a cypher, take wooded hikes, and use a TOTT to gain their smilies. Plenty of fun for participants indeed!

On Saturday, January 27th, more than 75 SLAGA members attended the Winter Potluck & Cabin Fever- 2024 Event (GCAG153) at the historic Jefferson Barracks Park along the Mississippi River in St. Louis County. The event was held in the main gymnasium and front room inside the large and comfortable Pavilion at Lemay facility, which was cost-free for SLAGA thanks to the generosity of the St. Louis County Parks. Event hosts, LFrank and Denmother, did a fantastic job, but they couldn't do it alone. They received a lot of volunteer assistance from start to finish.

To kick it off, the set-up crew consisting of spiritwolf922, vorlon40, and SWAseeker with the help of Cootieman, organized the event space nicely. Since this fun event was a potluck, there was plently of great food available which was provided by each attendee's family. The food line was set up by volunteers MrsSpongy, jray131, and StormRider22, and included tasty entries such as chillis, BBQ and other meat dishes, various 'sliders,' fruit and veggie trays, a wide variety of salads and yummy deserts. The lunch spread as always was a feast for the eyes and tummies.
Besides all the eating, attendees played Geo Bingo, which was run smoothly by your registrars 3nina and 6dancer, and many also entered the 50/50 drawing, because who could resist Ibew ret's selling prowess. Over $150 was collected this year. As always, there was a raffle table with some great items, which was successfully run by Uga_Mom, and a trackable exchange table too attended well by Kevinusmarshall.

Fall brings beautiful shades of reds, oranges, yellows, and browns into the fading greens of nature. SLAGA was blessed with hints of color at our Fall Picnic at Cliff Cave Park on Sunday, October 15, 2023. While the day started a bit damp and chilly, it changed quickly as the sun started peeking through the dynamic cloudy sky. Everyone in attendance enjoyed the gorgeous afternoon, the delicious shared food, the fun and games, and good conversation with fellow geocachers. The new SLAGA board members and game winners were announced, and geocaching milestone winners congratulated!
Hosts StormRider22 ( Laura) and jray131 (Jim) did a terrific job organizing this fun afternoon gathering. Lunch was a feast to behold, indeed. SLAGA provided the buns, hamburgers, brats, and hotdogs, which were perfectly grilled by volunteers Turtleladi1020nHubbs (Lynette and Mark), and the rest of the food was brought and shared by all the attendees.

The new SLAGA board looked a lot like our past with President Michael Smith (cootie_man) still at the helm, assisted by our vice presidents Robert Klemme (GeoKid12) and John Layman (vorlon40), and our treasurer Nan Dabler (nan-d1955). We bid farewell, with tremendous thanks, to our outgoing secretary Melissa Pierce (socibutte), and a big welcome to our newly appointed secretary Susan Adams (Treasure Isle).

Susan has been caching since 2012 and has over 5000 finds in 12 countries and 32 states. She's not adverse to trying all kinds of terrains and enjoys finding Interesting caches. In a brief interview, Susan stated that her one sister (from Virginia) introduced her to geocaching while on vacation in 2012. She said, "Initially I cached only when I was with her, so I picked up maybe 4-6 caches per year. After I retired, the 'Mystery at the Museum' game by Geocaching HQ in 2019 caught my eye. I had so much fun doing it, that I’ve upped my game since then. I enjoy hiking with my local muggle sister, and she lets me pick up a cache or two when we’re on the trails. I’ve also enjoyed the friendships that I’ve made through geocaching." We are thankful and lucky to have Susan on the SLAGA board this term.
