A Window on Caching
Geocaching Exhibit at Greensfelder County Park
By Paul Konopacki
Feburary 2, 2008

Greensfelder County Park is located north of "Six Flags St. Louis", near Eureka, Missouri. Considered a part of the Ozark mountain foothills, it has shaded trails, equestrian and group camping, picnic sites and shelters, and a learning center. (Google Map)
The park is significant to the St. Louis Area Geocachers Association (SLAGA) not only because there are a number of quality geocaches placed there, but for years the learning center has been the location of the SLAGA Geocaching 101 and GPS receiver training classes. The classes were formed years ago when SLAGA was looking for a place to hold them and the St. Louis County Parks Department was looking for an organization to present them as part of their annual activity catalog.
An Idea is Hatched

One day in 2006, Mary Cranor (geocaching name: Stranger Ranger), a St. Louis County Park ranger stationed at Greensfelder, contacted Richard Sheffold (geocaching name: RGS) to say they were going to remodel the learning center and add new exhibits. She thought it would be a great idea to add an exhibit about geocaching. Rich shared the idea with fellow geocachers to see if he could generate some interest and get a team together to build one. He was hoping to get someone who had woodworking experience or had previously designed exhibits. Unfortunately, there were no takers.
A year later in 2007, the park department's grand plan to remodel the learning center turned into just a few minor upgrades of material and some repainting. Rich still hadn't give up on the idea of a geocaching exhibit. During one of the Geocaching 101 training classes, Rich noticed that there were some other new exhibits being put up on the wall. He decided it was time to act before the spot he had in mind for the geocaching exhibit was taken by something else.
Time to Build

Rich was able to recruit fellow geocacher Dan Baldenweck (geocaching name: Didg Guy) to assist in the project. They set their sites on a section of blank wall in the learning center between to the water fountain and the park brochures.
A big obstacle to starting the project was that the parks department did not give them any parameters to work within, such as size, material or content. They would have to come up with their own vision of what the exhibit would be. They gave themselves an arbitrary $150 budget for materials.
Dan has a big woodworking shop at his house. Through a job association, he was able to aquire oak from a hard wood supplier at the wholesale cost of $25. This would be used for the cabinet. They needed to find transparent material for the front of the exhibit. Safety glass was too heavy and expensive. Plexiglas was readily available in 1/8th" thickness, but was not sturdy enough for use in the exhibit.
Mike Miesner (geocaching name: mmeese) enters the picture. Mike works on sales and purchasing for County Blue Reprographics. Rich had an association with Mike on a previous project to supply color maps for the 2007 MOGA geocaching event. One of the things that Rich wanted to do for this project was have some geocaching brochures available next to the exhibit. He contacted Mike to inquire the cost of an order for 500 2-sided black & white brochures. Mike said they could be produced for $25, a much better price than Kinko's. (To show you what a nice guy Mike is, he covered the cost of the printing, himself!)
When Rich stopped by to pick up the brochures, he happened to ask Mike if his business supplied Plexiglas. It sure does! Rich was able to get a 1/4" thick 3ft x 4ft piece for about $25. Once the Plexiglas was cut to size, Dan could put the finishing touches on the cabinet to allow the Plexiglas to slide into his routed grooves. Access to the content of the display would be made secure by a lock attached to the edge of the cabinet where the Plexiglas slides in.
What to Put Inside?

It was time to decide what would be put inside the display. They used pictures of local geocachers on geocache hunts, topographical maps, cache containers, samples of signature items and trinkets. Travel bugs and geocoins were placed inside the exhibit on a glass shelf, facing outward for people to see (and to "discover" via geocaching.com). One item that Rich thought would be a good addition was a GPS. He called up the sales department at Garmin and explained the project. A few days later he received an empty Garmin "yellow" case in the mail.
Ready to Install
On September 9, 2007, Rich and Dan took the display to the learning center and mounted it in its current location. After a few days, then encountered a minor problem where the pictures were not sticking to the burlap material. They tried foam board, but the contact cement did not work well with that material, either. The permanent solution was to use thumb tacks to attach the foam board to the particle board backing. The reaction to the display by the park department has been very positive. Mary Cranor has taken park rangers by to see the display and they have been impressed.
Total cost of the project was $90. SLAGA paid for the cost out of its treasury.

To our members:
The St. Louis County goverment has proposed the closure of over 20 St. Louis County parks, including such favorites as Lone Elk, West Tyson and Greensfelder. SLAGA is not about causes. SLAGA is certainly not about politics. But your Board of Directors feels that SLAGA must make itself heard on this subject. We sent the following letter to the St. Louis County Executive, each of the seven members of the County Council, and the Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation.
We are not taking sides in the political fight over the size - or the existence - of the County's financial problems. We are not arguing for or against a more equitable distribution of budget cuts, tax increases or deficit spending. Our message is simple: find a solution which preserves St. Louis County Parks.
Please take a moment to think about how - and how much - you benefit from St. Louis County Parks. If you live in St. Louis County, make yourself heard through your County Council Member. If you're from elsewhere in the region, your message still counts. Your visits to County Parks contribute to the economy in the County.

Name: Michael SmithCaching Since:March 2012 Number of Caches: 10,582 In 2012, with my then 9-year-old daughter and a friend, we attempted to find a geocache in the park behind our house. We failed at that attempt. Over 6 years later, I was re-introduced to Geocaching by C3GPS, the father of one of my daughter’s high school friends. I remember finding four that day and ending the excursion with ice cream. At that point, my interest was piqued and after a few more finds and happy hour events, I realized this was becoming a passion of mine. Since then I have hit the ground running, reaching 1,000 finds in just over 10 months and finding caches 450 straight days and counting. When C3GPS is not continuing to mentor me, one will find me caching with wife, Uga_Mom and the muggle child who gave me my cache name as she always says I have cooties. Others also know me for my picture taking (including selfies), uncomfortably long hugs, love of ice cream/frozen custard and being an introvert. |

Name: John LaymanCaching Name: vorlon40 Caching Since: 2015 Number of Caches: 9,200 Back in 2014 St. Louis celebrated its 250th birthday by placing more than 250 4’ tall fiberglass cakes decorated by local artists all around the area. Cindy and I traveled around to see all of them, exploring and recording our visits in their app. After that year we were looking for something else to do together to continue our area explorations. I had recently taken a class in this odd thing called geocaching at Trout Lodge using a yellow Garmin eTrex GPS, finding some hole punchers hidden in the area. It was fun so after that cake year, in early 2015, I signed up for a geocaching account using my existing online handle, vorlon40. I found my first cache close to home with a Garmin Nuvi car GPS but quickly switched to using Cindy’s smartphone, since I didn’t have one at that time. I eventually got my own smartphone and a GPS, which helps on the long hikes in the wilderness I like to take. One of my favorite cache adventures was a 5/5 which involve solving a two stage cypher and then hiking a 6.5 mile, two stage multi up the ski slopes of Copper Mountain, CO from 10,000 to 12,000 feet. Since our start we have found almost 4000 caches in 46 states so far, attending many local and out-of-state events, and adopting several caches in the area. Keep on caching and Savor the Journey. |

![]() Caching Name: Treasure Isle Caching Since:July 2012 Number of Caches: 5,575 In the summer of 2012, my family vacationed in Berlin, Germany. My older sister (kusunflower) asked if I’d be interested in looking for a geocache that was within walking distance of our hotel. I was pleased that I actually made the find. We picked up a few other caches on that trip. For the next several years, whenever my sister and I were on vacation together (about once a year) I picked up 2-5 caches. In 2019, about a year after I retired from a busy pediatric practice, the Mystery at the Museum challenge caught my interest. I’ve gradually upped my game each year since then. I love finding birthday caches and I generally search for ones that are nearby, then grab other caches in the area. I started out as a solo cacher, but soon started caching weekly with Team DLADL. After attending some events, I’ve been fortunate to have met a number of people with whom I’ve enjoyed caching both at home and on the road |

![]() Caching Name: TerriBikes+ Caching Since:July 2012 Number of Caches: 7,500 It was Fall of 2008. I was a retired Geological Engineer who then was teaching music and dance at a grade/middle school. My daughter was away at college and my son was headed there after his very busy senior high school year. My house was feeling 'lonely' already, and walking the dog at Castlewood was my only other distraction from the changes going on rapidly towards this next chapter of life. While on the trails, I'd often passed young dirt bikers, and wondered if I too could get out on the trails in a different sort of 'freeing' way, even at age 47 and after a 35 year hiatus from bike riding. So on a whim, I purchased a hybrid bike and started to ride. Fast forward a few years, since 'dirt' trails were taking a toll on my body and bike, I looked up local bike groups and researched different paved trails instead. On one trail description, it mentioned that there were also several 'geocaches' along the route. What in the world was a geocache? After looking it up, I wondered to myself why with a geo-background, being an outdoor lover, and a bike rider again, had I never heard of this activity. Sure enough on my next Grant's trail group ride, I saw a couple with a handheld unit of some kind step in and out of the woods. When I got home, I looked up this 'new' activity on the website and found an icon very near where I saw the couple on the trail. That's when I decided this was something I wanted to try. Fast forward again to 2023, I'm now completely retired, on my second adult bike and third dog, and have long since found my first geocache in 2012. I've been a member of SLAGA for nearly as long and to date have found over 7500 geocaches. I've cached in 10 countries and all 50 of the United States. I've provided several minor volunteer duties with SLAGA through the years, but now am the appointed 'roving reporter'/journalist for the website. Cache on my friends, because I want to write about it! |

It was freezing cold, I was bundled up like an Eskimo and when I found my first cache I was immediately hooked. I am a St. Louis County Park Ranger, so I also managed to figure out how to make work and play mesh – I became the St. Louis County Geocache Liaison. Basically, it means I get to cache while working. And I have also taught other park rangers around the country about geocaching at the Park Ranger Institute in North Carolina. Cache on!! |
