Slimey Salamander Cave CITO - take II
Description
The state of Missouri is nicknamed "The Cave State" and St. Louis County is no slacker when it comes to caves. Many of you are probably familiar with this park's namesake Cliff Cave, but did you know there are several other caves and a huge number of sinkholes in this park? Unfortunately, these places have historically been used as trash dumps (out of sight, out of mind....) and the caves and sinkholes of Cliff Cave are no exception. Slimey Salamander Cave has an interesting pile of large trash (think refrigerator, industrial sink, water heater, etc) in and around it and we would like to clear it up and see if we can even find the cave entrance again. Join folks from the Meramec Grotto caving community to help heal up this cave and get rid of the trash which has piled up over the decades.
Please bring gloves and whatever tools you may want to use. There isn't a huge amount of trash in there, but most of it is large, so some of it may be somewhat obstinate. I have a plan to get my truck nearby so we don't have to haul the trash too far, but we still have to get it out of the sinkhole, so be prepared to have a possibly challenging time with some of the trash. The good news is that we should hopefully have a group of High School Computer Club kids to help with figuring out logistics and lend their young backs and arms.
If you aren't up for big hauling, I'll also have trash bags if you want to wander the other trails and floodplain to look for trash there.
