For the August SLAGA Road Trip, a small but energetic group, traveled to Decatur IL on Friday night for a good night’s sleep before attending an event Saturday Morning. Major Boothroyd (aka “Q”) organized a Breakfast Meet ‘N Greet at the Downtown Decatur Café. We had a great meal and met some new cachers, not only from Decatur, but from the surrounding areas.
After Breakfast, we started the Country Road, Take Me Home series. If you haven’t done that series, the containers are worth the trip. Make sure you read the cache page and bring the necessary tools with you or you won’t be able to get some of these. “Q” came with us for cache maintenance and stayed while we grabbed more caches in Mason, IL. After we finished those, we completed the “Z” series. As we finished up the day, Nina (aka Excagirl) found her 500th cache. We headed to dinner but our wonderful weather decided to change and dropped buckets of rain on us. We were all tired so after dinner, we headed back to the hotel for a good night’s sleep.
After breakfast Sunday morning we hit the road again to do the “Feed the Frenzy” power trail. The weather was cool and cloudy, but no rain. We did have a few DNFs and replaced more than one wet log or damaged container, but made another 100-cache day. We headed back to STL about 4pm and stopped for just 2 more caches along the way. I think our total was 207 caches for the 2 days. Not a bad way to spend a weekend.

As many of you know, Joe Armstrong, better known as JoGPS, passed away quietly at his home this week. Joe's contributions to Geocaching and this community are so numerous that it becomes difficult to even acknowledge them all, much less to do justice to them, but we are going to try. The MTGC has secured Joe's favorite pavilion at Nashville's Warner Park to host a tribute to "Da Man", our own JoGPS on July 18th, 2015.

SLAGA Road Trip - Evansville IN

The first SLAGA road trip was to Evansville on May 1 thru May 3. We had 8 people, in 2 cars. I don’t think any of us know how many caches we will be able to log. This was a challenge cache trip. In the Evansville, IN area there are about 180 challenge caches. We signed a lot of challenge caches and a lot of traditional caches.
Now we have the fun of logging all the challenge caches. We had a meet and greet at Cracker Barrel for breakfast and met a good group of Indiana cachers. It was great putting some faces with some of the names on the caches that we were finding.
This was a great way to get to know other cachers. We had lots of laughs and found lots of caches. Made a wrong turn or two; one car made several wrong turns, but we won’t mention any names. Right Trekto?
I was sad when it was over and looking forward to future “SLAGA Road Trips”
